How VA figures your monthly payment
VA pays disability compensation every month, based on one combined rating from 10% to 100%. VA publishes a new rate table each year.
At 10% and 20%, everyone gets the same amount. From 30% up, the table has a row for each family situation, and VA adds a set amount for each extra child and for a spouse who needs Aid and Attendance.
| The rating | The combined rating on your VA decision. If you have several conditions, VA combines them with its own formula, not by adding them up. |
|---|---|
| The basic rate | Comes from VA's table for your rating and your spouse and parents, with your first child under 18 included. |
| Added amounts | A set amount for each other child under 18, each child 18 to 23 in a school program, and a spouse who gets Aid and Attendance. |
| Taxes | VA disability compensation isn't subject to federal income tax (38 U.S.C. 5301). |
| The yearly raise | Each year Congress raises the rates by the same percentage as Social Security, from December 1. |

What this estimate leaves out
Special monthly compensation
VA pays extra on top of these rates for certain severe disabilities, such as the loss or loss of use of a hand or foot. VA publishes those amounts in its special monthly compensation tables.
Your actual award
VA pays for the dependents it has on your record, from the dates it decides. Your VA decision letter shows your exact amount.

Questions people ask
How much is VA disability per month in 2026?
For a veteran with no dependents, from $180.42 a month at 10% to $3,938.58 at 100%. From 30% up, the amount is higher with a spouse, children or dependent parents. These are VA's rates effective December 1, 2025.
Does VA pay more for a spouse at 10% or 20%?
No. At 10% and 20%, VA pays the same amount with or without dependents. Extra pay for a spouse, children or parents starts at a 30% rating.
How much more does VA pay for a child?
Your first child under 18 is part of the basic rate. Each other child under 18 adds a set amount, from $32 a month at 30% to $109.11 at 100% in 2026. A child 18 to 23 in a school program adds from $105 to $352.45.
Is VA disability pay taxable?
Not for federal income tax. Federal law exempts VA benefits from taxation (38 U.S.C. 5301), and the IRS lists veterans' disability compensation as income you don't report.
When will the 2027 rates come out?
After Congress passes the yearly raise and VA publishes its new table. The 2027 bill would copy Social Security's 3.6% raise from December 1, 2026. Until then, our 2027 figures are estimates.
Can this site help me with my VA claim?
No. We only estimate payments and explain how VA's rates work. For help with a claim, contact VA or a VA-accredited representative, attorney or claims agent.
